San Antonio - The Alamo

The Battle of the Alamo in 1836 was a complete disaster in the Texas Revolution. Most Texians and Tejanos inside were killed by Mexican President General Santa Anna and his troops. But it served as a pivotal event that led to the Battle of San Jacinto with the battle cry, "Remember the Alamo" rallying throughout the veins of Texas patriots. While the building that remains is slightly underwhelming, it is very exciting - to me - to be in the place where history happened and learn about important historical events that helped shape the Texas we live in today.

There is a myth that Texan leader William Travis called the Texan defenders together and drew a line in the sand, asking all who were ready to die for Texas independence to cross the line and join him. Fact is, that was a tale concocted by an amateur historian in the late 1800's. There i s a myth that frontiersman Davy Crockett went down fighting. In fact, testimony from Mexican soldiers collectively agree that Crockett surrendered and was executed. Like this post began, the Alamo was a disaster. But it seems fun to visit. 🙄

Our only purchased souvenirs from the trip came in the form of a Davy Crockett "coonskin" hat and souvenir pennies.
