Galveston Getaway 2021

July 4th came and went, which meant it was time for our FOURTH annual Team Cohen family week of fun in Galveston! After a year of what it was, it was nice to get away and do different.

WAY packed and ready to go (Note the huge risk to put three
kids next to each other...for a very long drive...eek...)

How did my children (and I) survive an extended multiple-hour car drive being that close in proximity to each other, you ask?

The 4-hour drive turned into well over 5 hours with multiple rounds of unexpected traffic. And everyone did really well, Reggie included! That called for a treat!

We arrived in Galveston later than expected, unloaded in our beach house, made and ate a quick dinner, and then started our beach vacation off in just the right way - at the beach! Who needs bedtime on vacation??

Ethan was quite the wild man in the water, right from the start.

first night at the beach - success!

When we woke up on our first morning in our beach house, we were quite disappointed to see how much pouring rain was coming down outside. On their own, the kiddos entertained themselves with special edition "Beach Charades."

Once we ran out of patience for charades, we realized it wasn't thundering at all and put on our bathing suits. After all, bathing suits are meant to get wet! A little (read: "lot") of rain wasn't going to stop our fun.

It seemed the beach had also run out of patience waiting for us and came to find us at the house.

Somehow, we were the ONLY ones at the beach that morning. Strange.

my new favorite picture!

Since we had the whole place to ourselves, we headed to the playground across the street too. Why not? Where was everyone?

We left the sand, and it may have stopped raining. But the beach was still waiting for us when we got back to the house.

After lunch, Spencer, Ethan, Reggie, and I decided to go for a walk along the seawall.

Following some afternoon rest, we decided that the clouds had cleared and we should make it a double beach day. Back to the sand we went; this time, we braved the pup with us!

Three years ago, we discovered The Galveston Beach Band Concert series on Tuesday nights in the summer and loved it! Two years ago, it was rained out. One year ago, it was pandemic-ed out. And this year, the clouds magically stayed clear enough for us to enjoy it once more! We may have already had a full day, and it might have started at responsible children's bedtime...But...Who needs bedtime on vacation??

still feeling the patriotic American birthday love from the weekend before

The next morning, a little bit of sugar cereal and a fun spirit were all it took to convince Ethan to join me and Reggie on a walk.

Back at the beach, wild child Ethan was back at it with a tube float from our beach house

The rest of us were busy back at shore building a system of sand tunnels.

The rest of the pictures tell the rest of the story that fun morning.

In the afternoon, we took a stroll along the commercial center of downtown Galveston, known as The Strand.

Ice cream was obtained.

treats for everyone!

With one full day left of vacation, we started out with fancy glasses for our morning beverages.

Our final beach day was the sunniest and clearest of the week.

We dug a huge hole in the sand. And then, we got in and filled it up. That's about as complex as we got.

We had exhausted our stay and finished the milk. It was time to head home.

On our way back to Austin, we squeezed in one last bit of fun by surprising our Houston family for lunch.

a lovely way to end a lovely week with family togetherness

Thanks for the getaway; see you next year, Galveston!
