Goodbye Tonsils II

After the chaos of Ethan's bris came and went (meaning the baby was about 10 days old), we kicked our tiny newborn out of our room because his snoring was just too darn loud for us to get any rest. Fast forward over 2.5 years later, he continued to snore up a storm, drool, and breathe through his mouth. (See Fig A.)

After taking Ethan to an ENT, the doctor observed that on a tonsil size scale of 1-4, his ginormous tonsils were about a 4. We all agreed that the quality of his sleep was likely limited with his large tonsils and adenoids and that it would be best to have them removed. We signed up to have Team Cohen's second tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy and braced for the recovery that we had had with his older sister.

We woke him up at 5:30 to be at the hospital on time, but he was all smiles when we got there!

Ethan got brand new 'tonsils socks' just like the famous ones his sister got last year. Then we got a supportive picture from his sister at home.

Once the bed and way too many strange adults arrived, Ethan was less sure about this being a fun idea. Hospital staff provided him an ipad which provided slight distraction while they carted him away to surgery.

ALL DONE! Sleepy baby rests in recovery.

Ethan woke up and demanded Mommy snuggles. Poor baby was very groggy and in pain, and we were taken to our room for more rest.

Don't let the pitiful looks fool you; he was already on his
second popsicle here and already holding it himself.

We got love and support from the outside world:

Grandma and Grandpa sent a
care package with presents.

Nana was back at the home front taking excellent care of the
other 2 and sending sweet pictures of their adventures.

Daddy got some snuggles himself, and then Ethan was feeling well enough for resort-style luxury on his own.

By the afternoon (and about 10 popsicles later), Daddy and Ethan found a wagon and ventured outside to the 'Healing Garden'. We were grateful for gorgeous weather, a happy kiddo, and an awesome children's hospital.

Being that she was in the building anyway, Ms. Becca came to visit and provide snuggles!

By night, Ethan took a break from popsicles and moved on to ice cream!

In the morning, a restless Ethan takes matters into his own hands. The staff found him quite entertaining and were not so worried about his surgery recovery.

Apparently, this kid had surgery the day before...?
(He had a bracelet that said "fall risk.")

Before we're discharged, we take one more popsicle on one more adventure outside.

Look who we found! I think it's time to go home.

Throughout the next week at home,
we had some moments like this:
(especially, as warned, in days 5-8
when the scabs were falling off)

But for the most part, we were like this: (Medication is a good thing!)

(Especially with the help of our
daily "samovie"):

As a parent, you're always wondering if you've made the right choices (and I'm only 4.5 years deep). Either way, the results are in. Go back up and watch Fig A. Now see Fig B:
